Welcome

The smART studio at DeWitt Middle School emphasizes three main tenets; creating and learning through design process thinking (studio habits of mind), thoughtful verbal and written reflection on Visual Language and it's conversation with the self and humanity, and connections between each other and the world outside our school environment.

So, find your interest and feed the curiosity! Investigate, explore, sketch, create, review, revise, inspire, be inspired and create again. The cycle of learning—the cycle of design—is more than a privilege, it's the pathway to understanding. Through the Arts we cultivate self-directed, self-motivated habits of mind that lead us through a life-long pursuit of learning and participating in society.

Another logo design from Milton Glaser.

Food for thought: Why use an image? Why is the image of a heart more compelling and accessible than the word "love?"

6th Grade Origami Exploration

The 6th graders explored the art of origami. Inspired by the documentary "Between the Folds," students set out to master their favorite origami folding pattern.

Some students found directions in a book in the art room.

Others found YouTube to be a valuable source for finding and providing good directions to the origami patterns not in the books available in the art room.

Still others looked up origami on iPad apps! We found many different ways to explore available origami patterns as well as good directions!

After mastering an origami folding pattern, students wrote their own version of the directions!

Now students are working on creating videos that will demonstrate their origami pattern. Once complete, they will use editing features on iMovie to create a voiceover of their directions!  Watch for the "How to Origami Videos" on the DeWitt Art Studio YouTube Channel!
*YouTube Channel coming soon :)

VERY COOL video that combines the SENSIBILITY of DESIGN with the practical knowledge of construction and physics... a combination that I think encourages innovation!

I found this beautiful piece online without a credit. This reminded me of the radial symmetry name design project just completed. Can you find the reflective symmetry?

Another Chuck Close style work. Notice the changing color schemes that reflect the VALUE he is trying to convey.
